Restaurants do more than just feed our families – they connect communities, empower local economies, and bring people together. That’s why DoorDash was proud to support California Assembly Bill 671, landmark legislation that will cut costly permitting delays and help restaurants open and grow faster across the state.

AB 671 – introduced by Assemblymember Buffy Wicks – is all about cutting red tape to make it easier to open and operate a restaurant in the Golden State. The new law requires local building departments to approve or deny permit applications for restaurants within 20 business days, respond to revisions within 10 business days, and allow licensed professionals to certify compliance with safety standards. If agencies fail to act within the timeline, permits will be automatically approved. By streamlining the permitting process, restaurants will face fewer expensive delays, lower costs, and more time keeping staff employed and customers fed.

“AB 671 is a huge step toward making California a better place for small business. For years, we’ve heard from small business owners about the struggles and challenges they face, which is why DoorDash was happy to help advocate on behalf of this common-sense solution.”

-Liz Jarvis-Shean, DoorDash Chief Corporate Affairs Officer

Every day a restaurant can't open their doors is a huge blow, but this new law streamlines the process so that these crucial small business can spend less time worrying about bureaucracy and more time serving their communities.

At DoorDash, we believe it’s our responsibility to advocate for the restaurants and small businesses that are the heart of our communities. It’s our goal to uplift the voices of small businesses and stand side by side with them by championing sensible policies like this one. Supporting the passage of AB 671 was a no-brainer, and we were proud to do so in service of our mission to empower and grow local economies.
