In a groundbreaking, bipartisan move, Wisconsin has passed legislation to pave the way for the more than 100,000 app-based workers across the state to get access to portable benefits, while allowing them to maintain access to the independence they value.
“This bill sets up a portable benefits system so that platforms can contribute to accounts that we, as workers, control. These benefits would be flexible, portable, and follow us — no matter how or where we choose to work. This is about modernizing our systems so that app-based workers throughout Wisconsin can be set up for success. I shouldn’t have to choose between earning flexibly and planning for my future. This legislation offers a modern solution that respects the independence I value while planning for the future.”
–Maliki K, Wisconsin Dasher
DoorDash is proud to support this bill, which would make Wisconsin the national leader in modernizing an outdated benefits system that forces workers to choose between the independence they prefer and the benefits they want. If signed into law, Wisconsin would become the first state to enact a law that both authorizes benefits like health care for eligible Dashers, but also protects the independence they value.
While today is a huge victory for Wisconsin Dashers, the work is not quite done. Governor Evers still needs to sign this bill into law. We look forward to working with the governor to make Wisconsin a national model for empowering independent workers with the benefits and security they deserve.
