We know that many Dashers want access to the benefits typically only available through traditional employment, without sacrificing the independence and flexibility that make app-based work so valuable. In the past few years, we’ve taken the lead on helping more Dashers access portable benefits, launching pilot programs in Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Maryland that have already produced great results for Dashers. Now, lawmakers in Wisconsin are looking to establish a first-of-its-kind portable benefits program for certain app-based workers. We’re strongly supportive of this legislation, and look forward to working alongside lawmakers to help get it over the finish line.
This bipartisan proposal recognizes the evolving nature of work and offers a forward-thinking solution that empowers Dashers by helping them access benefits like health, vision, and dental insurance, retirement planning, or to replace lost income in case of emergency—while protecting the flexibility that so many value. Under the bill, platforms like DoorDash could contribute to individual portable benefit accounts based on a driver’s earnings, giving workers more support without risking their independence.
Thousands of Wisconsinites turn to platforms like DoorDash to earn on their own terms. This legislation reflects what we hear from Dashers time and again: they want both flexibility and access to benefits. Dashers themselves took to the State Capitol in Madison in February to tell their representatives how strongly they feel about this proposal. We applaud Wisconsin lawmakers for working to ensure app-based workers like Dashers can have access to both.
