DoorDash has introduced Occupational Accident Insurance for Dashers in Canada, providing automatic, no-cost coverage designed to support Dashers in the rare event of an injury while using the platform.

While the vast majority of deliveries are completed safely, access to support matters when unexpected situations arise. This coverage helps ensure Dashers have access to lost income support and assistance with medical expenses, so they can focus on recovery rather than navigating the complexity of coverage for injuries, as independent contractors often face.

  • Dasher Eligibility: Dashers are automatically covered at no cost to them and with no enrollment required. Coverage applies while Dashers are online, including when they are available to dash, completing deliveries, and for a short period after they log off. Dashers are covered in all provinces and territories, other than in places where injury coverage already exists under provincial systems.

  • Policy Coverage: Dashers will be able to receive lost income assistance based on average weekly earnings, support for uncovered medical expenses, and additional protection in the event of more serious injuries.

  • Simple Process: Dashers can submit claims through an easy-to-use interface (accessible via web or mobile), reducing confusion and complexity of navigating injury coverage and helping make support easy to access.

Debuting Occupational Accident Insurance in Canada marks an important safety milestone, ensuring all Dashers have access to injury coverage.

“This coverage strengthens protections for Dashers in Canada while preserving the independence and flexibility of app-based work,” said Brian Kaufmann, Head of Policy at DoorDash Canada. “It’s an important milestone in ensuring all Dashers have access to injury protections across the country.”

According to DoorDash’s 2025 Dasher Survey, nearly three-quarters of Dashers say the income they earn on deliveries helps them feel more financially secure, and 8 in 10 Dashers use income from DoorDash to cover unexpected expenses. This coverage strengthens protections without changing what makes dashing unique and valuable to Dashers.
