DoorDash welcomes today’s action by the Department of Labor which reflects growing momentum for a new approach to work that both protects worker’s independence, while expanding access to benefits.

Max Rettig, Vice President of Global Public Policy at DoorDash:

“The proposed rule released today meets workers where they are. Millions of Americans choose to earn supplemental income on DoorDash because of the unique flexibility it provides. This rule respects that choice. This proposal comes amid growing momentum for a new approach to independent work. For too long, the debate was stuck in a false choice between flexibility and security. But now we’re seeing multiple states advance portable benefits pilots and legislation, and momentum for this overwhelmingly popular policy is growing in DC too. Independent work should not be a political football with rules changing back and forth. We encourage lawmakers to protect the freedom to work independently and expand access to the benefits workers deserve.”

DoorDash has long been a champion for policies that preserve flexibility for independent workers, while also offering them a way to access benefits that they may need. We’ve partnered with leaders in Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Maryland to launch first-of-their-kind pilots to test portable benefits programs for Dashers, and have supported legislation in Congress that would allow even more states to implement programs like these. With federal action, we can move closer to realizing this promise for millions of independent workers nationwide.

We are confident that Dashers have long been properly classified as independent contractors under federal law — across administrations of both parties. Today’s proposal provides important clarity and stability for workers who value independence.
